MARKET PLACE
1. (South Side)
1483 ------------
Nos 4 & 6
TL 0488 1/87 18.6.55.

II* GV

2.
These 2 houses form 1 architectural unit, but oddly No 6 has a heavy eaves cornice,
No 4 has not. Early C18. 2 storeys in ashlar with steep stone slate roofs with
raised verge at centre and both ends. Heavy stone chimney at centre and west end.
6 pedimented dormers in all, 2 triangular and centre segmental on both. Both have
5 windows to 1st floor and in addition there is a blind window in the centre.
A continuous band links the cills. The windows are early sash with heavy glazing
bars, narrow moulded cases, plain reveals, stone lintels with triple keystones.
2 more early windows survive complete at the west end of the ground floor of No
4 and above these the only remains of a platband. No 4 also has a good C19 shop
front. The entire ground floor of No 6 is taken up by a late shop. Central doorway
to passage between the houses, heavy rusticated doorcase with cornice, semi-circular
headed doorway with panelled door and panelled inset above.
