Manor house. Early C18, for Apethorpe Estate extended. C19 and early C20 for
Lord Brassey. Squared coursed limestone with ashlar dressings and Collyweston
slate roof. Originally L-shape plan. 2 storeys with attic and cellar. Main front
is a 5-window range. Central panelled door has moulded stone surround and a
2-light stone mullion fanlight above, flanked by moulded consoles, with pediment
over. 2-light stone mullion windows with transoms. Chamfered plinth and raised
band between floors. Dentilled wood cornice and 5 gabled roof dormers. Ashlar
gable parapets and kneelers and ashlar end stacks with moulded cornices. Flight
of steps, with attached iron railings, to front door. C19 and C20 alterations to
left gable. Rear wing is similar. Rear elevation of main range has 3-light
staircase window with transom. Late C19/early C20 wing attached at right angles
to rear wing. Interior: C18 staircase with turned balusters and square newels;
probably restored C19. Rooms to left and right of entrance have chamfered spine
beams, Drawing Room, to left, has moulded bracket under beam. Dining Room to
right of entrance has corner fireplace with bolection moulded, marble surround.
Original rear entrance, now into cloakroom, has moulded stone surround with
2-light stone mullion fanlight above. Said to have been built as a stewards
house for Apethorpe Hall by the Earl of Westmorland.
