Manor house. Datestone HBE/1694 for Henry Bagley, C18 alterations. Squared
coursed and regular coursed lias with ashlar dressings and slate roof laid to
diminishing courses. T-shape plan. 2 storeys with attic. Entrance front of
3-window range of 4- and 6-light stone mullion and transom windows, those at
ground floor have relieving arches over with keystones. Central C17 panelled and
studded door, reputedly from Whiston Manor House, has moulded stone architrave
with linked square and circle pattern, plain frieze and moulded architrave
above. Later pedimented hood over. Rusticated quoins, and plain string courses
between floors. Moulded stone cornice and ashlar gable parapets and kneelers.
Central roof dormer with simple pediment. Ashlar stacks at ends with moulded
cornices. Gable to left has two 2-light first floor window, now blocked, with
stone transoms and 2 similar single-light attic windows above. Projecting wing
to rear of main front has 3-window range to garden with one 4-light stone
mullion and transom window, with leaded lights, to right, and two C18 sashes
with glazing bars under wood lintels to left. South gable has blocked door
opening with similar surround to that of the main front. Datestone in gable to
left of main front. Interior: has early C18 staircase with turned balustrade.
Kitchen has remains of open fireplace with bressumer. First floor room centre of
main front has reset C17 panelling. Room to right has fireplace with bolection
moulded surround.
