Lodge. 1868 by E.W. Godwin. Coursed squared limestone with limestone dressings,
plain-tile roofs, stone end and lateral stacks. Gatehouse and attached
double-depth-plan lodge cottage. 2 and 3 storeys. Picturesque composition.
3-storey gatehouse has moulded segmental-arched carriage arch with semi-circular
responds, flanked by off-set buttresses. Shields with Compton arms to spandrels
of arch. 2-light leaded ovolo-moulded stone mullion window above. String course
at sill level. Narrow 1-light window to gable above with chamfered stone
surround. Stone-coped gable with kneelers and seated dragon finial to apex.
Single-storey wing to left with quoins and stone-coped gable with kneelers; no
windows to this side. Circular stair turret rises from 2-storey, 1-window
attached lodge house to right. Turret has slit windows with chamfered stone
surrounds, chamfered eaves, conical roof with ball finial and rises above
gatehouse. Doorway to house, at foot of stair turret has C20 door, curved stone
jambs, moulded stone lintel and pointed arched panel above, framing cartouche of
arms. 4-light chamfered stone mullion windows to ground and 1st floors, that to
ground floor with transom and both leaded. Single-storey lean-to extension to
right. Carriageway has stone tunnel vault with 3 ovolo-moulded ribs and
cast-iron double-leaf gates. Lodge stands at head of road to Earls Barton and
former station.
