LITTLE HOUGHTON BEDFORD ROAD
SP8059 (North side)
11/136 Nos.79 and 81

- II

Pair of cottages. Late C17/early C18 extended C18 and altered C19 and C20.
Coursed limestone and ironstone rubble, C20 interlocking tile roof, brick end
and ridge stacks. Probably a 2-unit plan originally, extended to 3 with further
one-unit extension. Original core (shared between 79 and 81) has blocked door,
formerly central, with wood lintel and 3-light casement windows to ground floor
and 1st floor left and 2-light C20 casement to 1st floor right, all with wood
lintels. This core has alternate bands of ironstone and limestone to its
walling. C18 full height, 1-bay extension to right is chiefly of coursed
limestone rubble with ironstone quoins. This part has 4-panel door of No.81 to
left with wood lintel and C20 hood, a C20 3-light casement to ground floor right
and 2-light casement to 1st floor both with wood lintels. Ironstone-coped gables
with kneelers either end of extended core. Lower 2-storey, 1-window extension to
left with 4-panel door to No.79 to right with C20 hood, and 3-light casements to
ground and lst floor, all with wood lintels. Interior noted as having chamfered
spine beams.
