Description

SEATON SLUICE THE HARBOUR
NZ 3376 NZ 33767680
14/110 Remains of sluice
gate at west end
of the cut
GV II

Sluice gate and fittings, probably C19 but replacing an original of 1764 by
Thomas Delaval, the engineer, for John Hussey Delaval. Cast iron, timber.
Remains of heavy boarded gate sliding in U-section girder uprights set into rock.

The landward gate of the 'new cut' constructed 1761-4 to provide both an all-
weather harbour entrance and a deep-water dock, a bold engineering scheme costing
£10,000 expedited by the use of lime blasting. This was the first floating harbour
on the east coast.
Listed for historical value.
