6/68 Iron Bridge,
over River Aln
II*

Bridge, dated 1812 on maker's plate, by I. & T. Cookson of Newcastle. Cast
iron; abutments squared stone. 3 round arches, with rings
in open spandrels and quatrefoil-plan piers rising from stone footings. Main
girder above has Percy lion at centre and ends, and crowned crescents above
piers. Ornamental openwork embattled parapet with trefoil-headed panels and
cusped lozenges above piers; quatrefoil-plan standards at each end with
maker's plates on inner faces, with similar outer standards at end of abutment
parapet.

Good quality and relatively early iron bridge.
