3/183 Grovewood House

Vicarage, now old people's residential home. 1862, by James Deason of London
for 4th Duke of Northumberland. Snecked stone with tooled ashlar dressings;
grey Lakeland slate roof. Tudor style.

East elevation 2 storeys, in 2 sections. Chamfered plinth. Projecting left
bay has gable with smaller gablet on right and pent-roofed projection on far
right; right-of-centre studded door with foliate hinges, 2-light transomed
window and dated panel with Percy arms under cornice at 1st floor level.
3-bay right part has tall transomed 2-light stair window on left, 2-light
windows and tall stepped lateral stack with chamfered angles and cap to shaft;
similar stack on ridge. 2-bay left return and 3-bay rear elevation show 2-
and 3-light windows; those to ground floor transomed; some 1st floor windows
in gabled half dormers. Corbelled-out stack on gabled right bay of rear
elevation; lower part of left bays behind late C20 extension. All openings
in recessed and chamfered surrounds;, ground-floor windows mostly casements,
others plain sashes; coped gables on moulded kneelers.

Twin-gabled right return shows studded door flanked by 12-pane sashes.
Interior: 4-panel doors, folding panelled shutters, dogleg closed-string
stair with stop-chamfered balusters, and newels with moulded finials and

Late C20 extensions to west are not of special interest.
