23/276 Conservatory and
stables to north-
east of Cragside
Park House

Conservatory and stable. Third quarter of C19, for Lord Armstrong. Conservatory
timber framed with glazed cast-iron roof, on ashlar plinth; rear wall squared
stone. Stables to rear squared rubble with tooled dressings and Welsh slate
roof. Conservatory has projecting centre part with asymmetric-gabled roof,
and pent side parts, sharing common spine wall with pent stable range at rear.

South elevation: Centre part 22 narrow bays; central door, chamfered plinth.
Side parts each 18 narrow bays; ornamental wrought-iron thistle-pattern ridge.
Returns show chamfered plinth stepped uphill; rear (stable) part of right
return has circular window. Rear elevation (stables): central gabled projection
with boarded door; three 12-pane Yorkshire sashes to right.

Interior: Conservatory has stepped floor with c.80 large rotating ceramic
pots, with sockets for smaller intermediate pots (now removed). Underfloor
ventilation and heating chamber, with arched vents in faces of steps.

Smoke was drawn away from the heating apparatus by a refined ventilation
involving a long flue and 2 chimneys (q.v.) on the hillside to the north east.
