Description

ROTHBURY TOWN FOOT
Nu 0501
(North side)
25/306 Rothbury Mbtors
Garage
II

Garage, dated 1913 with initials J.T.L. Rock-faced front and dressings,
snecked stone returns; Welsh slate roof with glazed sections and red tile
cresting. 2 storeys. Broad 3-bay gabled front with large buttresses has
pair of shop windows flanking central recess with 2 part-glazed doors;
datestone above, beneath 4-light casement window. Boarded double doors under
basket arch in left bay, and casement window to right. Stepped and shaped
gable with flat coping. Left return in 2 parts: main 9-bay part with stepped
buttresses and windows in alternate bays, lower unbuttressed 2-bay part to
left with casement windows. Buttressed right return has pent outshut.

Interior: Cast-iron roof trusses with diagonal strutting. A photograph
probably taken at the opening of the garage, now in the Tourist Information
Centre, shows that this Pre-World War I garage is virtually unaltered; it is
a rare survival.
