and chapel spire
Entrance screen and porch/spire of former twin mortuary chapels; 1878, chapels
demolished 1971. Rock-faced quadrant walls, squared stone porch/spire; cut
dressings; cast iron gates. Porch/spire in free late C13 style.
Square gate piers with chamfered plinth and moulded pyramidal caps hold double
gates which have shaped rails and moulded pyramid-topped bars and dogbars;
low serpentine quadrant walls with arched coping. Porch has moulded arch with
string-course above, quatrefoil panel and slatted belfry opening with raised
surround in gabled half dormer at base of slender octagonal spire with 2
moulded rings. Above low diagonal buttresses the side walls are swept back
to the base of the spire.
