Country House, now old peoples' home. 1898 by W.L. Newcombe of Newcastle for
Mr. R. Deuchar. Squared stone with ashlar dressings; graduated Lakeland slate
roof. Near-square plan with central stair hall; short wing to west. Classical
style.
South front. Main part 2 storeys, 3 + 1 + 3 bays, symmetrical. Plinth; 1st
floor sill band. Centre bay has prostyle Roman Doric porch,with paired
columns to front and sides on high plinth walls, enclosing part-glazed double
doors with overlight and side-lights. 1st floor tripartite sash in architrave
with balustraded parapet above between pilasters with urn finials. Side
parts have French windows in architraves under cornices; 1st-floor plate glass
sashes under cornices. Hipped roof with 2 corniced stacks on each side slope.
Set back to left a 1-bay wing showing similar fenestration; hip-ended roof
with ridge stack.
West front 2 bays, with projecting 3-bay wing to left; similar fenestration.
East front 7 bays, the centre a 3-window bow, with ground floor windows under
a linked cornice. North (entrance) front has centre porch similar to that on
south; centre 3 bays have 2nd floor with balustraded parapet.
All ground-floor windows have patterned glazing to top lights, each with
Deuchar arms and motto in Greek Key border.
Interior largely contemporary: Full-height central hall with 3-bay elliptical
arcade on west and imperial stair with moulded square balusters, moulded
handrails, panelled newels with pendants and similar balcony balustrade; domed
roof light with coloured glazing. Ornamental cornices. Half-glazed screen
to entrance lobby
Attached altered single-storey link and other buildings to north-west are not
of special interest
