NU 0426-0526 CHILLINGHAM THE SQUARE

Estate houses. Dated 1836 in gables. By Edward Blore for the Earl of Tankerville.
Roughly dressed stone with ashlar surrounds. Welsh slate roof. U-shaped plan.
2 storeys. 6 bays in all. Projecting wings, and porches which project from end of
wings into courtyard, have gables with overlapping coping and kneelers. Gable ends
have 2-light mullioned windows with 8-pane sashes in each light. Other ground floor
windows are 16-pane sashes. These are all set in slightly recessed chamfered
surrounds. Upper windows facing the courtyard are flat-topped dormers breaking the
eaves with 12-pane casements. Big, coupled, stone, corniced stacks, 3 on ridge and
one projecting on each return. Small screen walls with chamfered square piers and
ridged coping project from porches to form gateway to courtyard. Square gate piers
with pyramidal caps.
