8/8 Carham Hall
Country house, mid-late C19 for the Compton family, on older site. Remodelled
c.1920 for Mrs. Burrell. Beige sandstone ashlar with pink ashlar dressings,
roof of small Devonian flags. Tudor style. 2 storeys plus attics, 8 bays,
the 5 left bays altered and refronted c.1920.
Tudor-arched doorway with 2-light mullioned overlight in 6th bay. 4 slightly-
projecting gabled bays with 4-light windows. Elsewhere 2- and 3-light windows.
Bays 2-4 have half dormers with shaped gables and Baroque-style carving in the
gables. Gabled roofs with kneelers, ridged coping and tall corniced ridge
Interior: Dining room has re-used linenfold panelling of 2 different patterns,
also some early C20 linenfold. Overmantel is also a mixture of C16 and C20
work. 2 doors, one with old linenfold panels in modern frame; the other with
C16 carved medallion portrait panels in C20 frame. High-relief plaster freize
with festoons and pilasters, Jacobean-style ceiling with geometric patterns
of plaster ribs.
South hall has possibly re-used early C18 panelling.
Entrance hall has early C20 panelling, probably incorporating re-used early
C18 panels, and fireplace with bolection-moulded surround.
Elsewhere much early C20 detail including friezes, plaster ceilings, doors
