Description

WALLINGTON DEMESNE WALLINGTON
NZ 0384 NZ 032849
21/201 The Arches
GV II*
Courtyard gateway from Wallington Hall, 1735, re-erected as eyecatcher 1751.
Squared stone with ashlar dressings. 3 bays. slightly-projecting pedimented
centre bay has semicircular arch; flanking bays and l-bay returns have similar
smaller arches. Piers with square bases, bulgy rustication and impost blocks.
Sunk panels above flanking arches hold double-headed busts from Aldersgate,
London. Central bay has heavy pyramidal finials with dog-tooth ornament,
carried on and supporting stone balls; smaller but similar finials at each end
of facade, truncated finials on returns.

First erected at Wallington Hall but found to be too narrow for coaches, so
replaced by Clock Tower Gate (q. v.).
