27/341 Charlton headstone approx
3 yards south of
Church of St. Mary

GV II

Headstone. 1795 to James Charlton aged 24. Sandstone tablet with scrolled
pedimented top holding shell. Moulded surround. Relief carving of urn and
symbols of death.
Inscribed:
Our life tho' short is mix'd with much alloy.
Death blasts a father's hope, a mother's joy.
Their fondest prospects quickly does destroy.
From us, alas, our darling youth is torn
This may excuse our weakness when we mourn.
Ours is the loss, the gain is all his own.
