Description

NY 88 SE BELLINGHAM REDESMOUTH

6/37 Redesmouth House and
Redesmouth House Cottage

GV II

House of several builds: possibly C16, early-mid C17, C18 and early-mid C19.
Entrance front ashlar, the rest rubble. Welsh slate roofs. Irregular plan.
The oldest part, now largely a separate cottage, suggests a hall range, and
the C17 part an added cross-wing. Beyond this an C18 block was added; then in
the C19 the house was turned back to front and a long front range masked the
two earlier sections: 2 storeys, 4 bays. In second bay a door with margined
overlight + triple keystone. Later C19 canted bay to left. Other windows 12-
pane sashes with projecting cills. Deep eaves, fancy bargeboard on left return
gable; 3 corniced stone stacks.

Rear elevation: at left the old 2-storey, 3-bay range shows huge quoins and a
boulder plinth. Wide, off-centre door in slightly-chamfered alternating-block
surround. Yorkshire sashes and a small monolith window; small, blocked upper
windows. Imposing gabled cross-wing of 2½ storeys has, on first floor, a cross
window, with low-set transom, in cable-moulded surround. Similar ground-floor
window has lost its cross; and top window has no transom. Set-back early C18
right section has a round-arched staircase window. Traces of C18 refenestration
of the cross-wing can be seen on left return and inside. Windows generally
early C19 sashes with glazing bars. Steeply pitched roofs to older parts. Cross-
wing has large central stone stack with 4 brick shafts; old part has C19 tall
corniced brick end chimneys.

Interior: 2 early C18 stone fireplaces with bolection mouldings, pulvinated
friezes and cornices. Many 2-panelled doors in rear wing, and 6-panelled doors
and internal shutters in C19 block. Early C19 staircase with wreathed handrail.
Back stair has C17 handrail but C18 and C19 balusters. Old roof timbers with
collar-beam trusses and curved principals in rear wing.
