NZ 08 SW KIRKWHELPINGTON KIRKHARLE

8/78 Kirkharle Farmhouse

GV II

House. Early C19 but with older core. Ashlar and Welsh slate roof.

2 storeys. H-plan. Garden front 5 bays. Very high plinth. 3-bay centre has
12-pane sashes on ground floor and shortened 6-pane sashes above. Slightly
projecting 1-bay wings have tripartite sashes on ground floor and 6-pane sashes
above. Wings also have raised alternating quoins to plinth level, and 1st floor
sill band.

Entrance front has plank and battened door in second bay. Wing to left is
random rubble and was attached to further building. Hipped roof with 2 stone
corniced ridge stacks.

Interior has stone vaulted basement and 6-panelled doors. Also one wall of
great thickness.

The house is the partly rebuilt wing of the mansion of Loraine family -
Lancelot Brown's first employers.
