Church of St.Bartholomew

Churchyard memorial. 1790. Ashlar. Plain tablet with arched top inscribed to
William Atkinson who died by a fall from his horse. It says:

In an extensive business, Industry and Integrity
brought him patronage and Respect. Stranger alike to
servility and Oppression he studiously avoided to give
offence to the Rich and cherished the laudible Endeavours
of the poor.
READER!
That thou mayst merit the sigh and tear due to the
memory of the good and just
Like his
Let thy life be useful and blameless.

Rear of stone has earlier carving of cherubs and commemorates a death of 1775.
