Description

NY 75 NE ALLENDALE

8/15 Farm buildings 20
metres north of
Westside Farmhouse
II

Former house now agricultural store. Bastle derivative house probably of
c.1610 with dwelling above byre. Squared rubble with stone dressings;
stone slate roof, reduced stack on left gable. 2 storeys, 4 irregular bays.
Ground floor has 2 ventilation slits and doorway with flat-pointed head.
1st floor has single-light window with chamfered surround, 2-light mullioned
window, door with flat-pointed head in square frame, single-light window
with chamfered surround. Rear elevation; ground floor has ventilation slit
and 2 later porches; 1st floor has small square window near left end, in
timber frame with mortices for central mullion and iron bars.
Interior shows original rough transverse ceiling beams and heavy corbels for
hearth at left end, first floor has remains of fireplace at left end (right
end not seen due to fill of hay) and 4 roof trusses, the central pair original
and of principal rafter form with collars, carrying 2 levels of purlins.
An interesting building, somewhat superior to the usual bastle houses and
perhaps a little later in date. Its construction can be approximately dated
by the discovery in 1899 of a hoard of 91 silver coins minted between 1554
and 1606, hidden in a ground-floor wall.
Ramm, McDowall and Mercer, 'Shielings and Bastles' HMSO 1970 p.82.
Ordnance Survey Record Card.
