26/29 Allenheads Hall


Country House built 1854 as a residence for Thomas Sopwith, mine agent and
engineer, who may have been the architect. Squared stone with tooled and
margined quoins, ashlar dressings, slate roofs. Irregular L-plan. Eclectic
style with Gothic details. Entrance front 2 storeys, 6 bays, the 3 at left
facing the stable yard. In fifth bay a slightly projecting porch with heavy
cornice; 12-pane sash windows with shouldered lintels. Corbel table to eaves.
Hipped roofs with corniced ridge stacks. West front 4 bays, irregular, with
canted bay. Interior not seen.
