12/143 Burnstones Railway
Viaduct (over the A689
and the Thinhope Burn)


Railway viaduct,1852. Probably by Sir George Barclay-Bruce. Stone. Elliptical
and semicircular skew arches, 4 to river and one, skewed at a different angle,
to road, with blind arch between. Rock-faced piers with triangular cutwaters
to river arches; road arch flanked by pilasters. Intrados of arches have
rusticated blocks, imposts rock-faced. Projecting half-round cornice at base
of parapet. For Alston Branch of Newcastle-Carlisle railway.
