16/165 Bridge over Sipton Burn
on the Long Drag

Bridge, dated 1878 with initials W.B.B. on slab on external face of west
parapet. Squared stone with cut dressings. Lofty bridge spanning a ravine,
side walls with marked batter. Round-headed arch slightly recessed from
wall face. Flanking pilasters. Band below parapet, arched parapet coping
with blocks linked by iron clamps. The bridge is associated with the Long
Drag, a well graded mine road used for carrying lead from the Allendale mines
over Allendale Common to Whitley Chapel and Hexham.
