5/87 Stocksfield House

GV II

Former headmaster's house to Bywell School, dated 1832. Squared stone with
tooled ashlar porch and dressings; Welsh slate roof. Tudor Gothic style.
South elevation 2 storeys, 2 bays. Chamfered plinth. Projecting porch at
left has vertical-panelled door in chamfered pointed arch with hollow-chamfered
hoodmould; moulded string below moulded parapet stepped up over central plain
recessed panel. Single-light windows in porch returns and to right of porch;
2-light window above. At right 2-light windows, the upper in corbelled-out
gabled half dormer with serpentine traceried bargeboard; date panel with
Allendale arms over upper window. All openings in chamfered surrounds.
Overhanging eaves; central stack with 4 short diagonally-set shafts.

Right return 2 gabled bays; 3-light (lower) and 2-light windows, similar
ornamental bargeboards. Rear elevation shows porch projection with renewed
doors in 4-centred chamfered arch. Corbelled-out 1st floor with 2-light
windows and Allendale arms in gable; ornamental bargeboards.
