Barn and Mill

II

Barn, part converted to mill. Mid and later C19. Mill machinery
installed by Wakes and Lamb of Newark for Colonel Wilson of
Hexgreave Park. Red brick. Plain tile roof, hipped to the left. 2
storeys, 4 bays. Doorway with large plank double door, to the
right is a single segmental arched opening with wooden shutter.
To the left is a single flight of brick and ashlar steps with
doorway in the front. Further left and slightly projecting from
the steps is a red brick and pantile lean-to with doorway with
plank door flanked by single slit ventilators. Above, right is a
single small opening with wooden shutter to the left is a
doorway, a doorway with plank door and on the far left an opening
with wooden shutter. To the right of the barn is a single storey
single bay wing with hipped pantile roof and single segmental
arched opening. To the left of the barn and projecting is a one
and a half storey single bay red brick and plain tile wing with
small segmental arched doorway with plank door. Above is an
opening with wooden plank panel with some entrances for pigeons.
This wing contains the iron water wheel. To the rear of the barn
are single storey cow sheds and stables forming a quadrangle with
covered crew yard. Extending in front of the left bays of the
barn is a foot bridge with red brick parapet coped with blue
brick. Interior contains most of the machinery for driving the
grinding stones including Great Spur Wheel and stone nuts. There
is a straw chopper and a handle to operate the sluice gate.
