Country house. Gothic revival style. 1859-61 By (Sir) George Gilbert Scott for John Manners-Sutton. Incorporates service range, 1844-46 by A. Salvin for the same client. Service range in Renaissance revival style. Brick and ashlar with ashlar dressings, gabled, hipped and pyramidal slate roofs.

Fireproof design with iron and concrete structure. Moulded and chamfered plinths, sill and lintel bands, machiolated and moulded eaves, moulded balustrades with some crocketed finials, coped gables. Four side wall and four ridge stacks grouped and with decorative brick and ashlar caps. Polychrome brick bands, opening heads and diaper work. Windows are lancets, mostly with shafts with foliate capitals and hood moulds, and mullioned and transomed casements, some with shafts. Some panelled and shouldered architraves. Glazing is plain sashes or plate glass casements. All facades are asymmetrical. Three storeys plus attics. Nine bays wide by three bays deep. Irregular L-plan with spinal corridors.

Main west front has four bay central block flanked to left by square tower with extruded corner tower to its left. To right, gabled projecting wing and to its left, gabled extruded corner. Tower to left has a triple lancet. To its right, central block has square corner bay window to left, with a triple lancet. In return angle, a double lancet. To right, three buttresses and three double lancets; to their right, two larger, double lancets. To right again, two shouldered casements. Projecting wing has a two storey canted bay window with four lancets. Above, to left, a casement and a double lancet. In return angle, a casement and a lancet. To right, four mullioned casements and two transomed casements. To right again, three casements. Above again, to left, a casement and a transomed double lancet. In return angle, a transomed double lancet, and to right, five gabled dormers with casements. To right again, a double lancet. Above again, to left a casement and a transomed double lancet. In return angle, a transomed double lancet, and to right, five gabled dormers with casements. To right again, a double lancet. Above again, to left, a casement.

South front has central projecting gabled bay and to right, projecting square tower, three stages. To left, corbelled stack and two double casements. Projecting bay, to right, has a triple lancet. To right again, central buttress flanked by single paired lancets. Above, to left, a mullioned and transomed lancet, and to right a triple lancet. To right again, a canted oriel window with three double lancets. Above, again, to left, a flat roofed dormer and to right a gable with double casement. To right again, a pair of transomed double lancets.

East front has to left, projecting tower, and to right, a projecting three bay wing. To right again, square clock tower, five stages. To left, two double lancets. Central block has three buttresses and off-centre external stack. To left, two large leaded casements with traceried openings, and to right, a square headed triple lancet with central French window. Projecting wing, to right, has two bay arcade with paired central piers, and to right, a triple lancet. Above, to left, two double lancets. To right, two double lancets, and to right again, three double lancets in square headed reveals. Above again, to left, two transomed double lancets, and to right, six gabled dormers with double casements.

Clock tower has four projecting gabled crocketed dormers, each with a blank clock space. Above, square bell turret with four cusped head openings and spire with finial.

To north, carriage court and main entrance. Carriage court has to west four bay irregular arcade with glazed or blocked openings. Square domed leaded roof. Service range, brick with ashlar dressings, patterned and plain tile roofs. Chamfered plinth, some dentillated eaves, moulded coped gables with kneelers. Two and three storeys, ten bays wide by seven bays deep, with square courtyard to east and projecting wings to west. Five ridge, three gable and three side wall stacks, mostly grouped. Windows are mainly mullioned and transomed casements with leaded glazing or iron glazing bars.

North front has to left a C20 two storey flat roofed addition. To its right, two casements and to right again, projecting carriage entry with flanking brick piers, ashlar quoins, and stepped head. Flanked to left by a casement and to right by two casements. Beyond, to right, two doorways, that to left blocked. Above, to left, large casement and to right, four smaller casements.

Buttressed kitchen building, to west again, has four leaded casements. Office building, to west again, has two cellar openings with segmental heads and three casements with a single light to their left. Above, four casements. West gable has a single casement on each floor.

East front has five C20 casements and to their right, two C19 metal casements. Above, seven stone and timber mullioned casements. South front has gable ends off-centre and to right. To left, a casement, and to its right, a C20 mullioned and transomed casement. Above, to left, projecting gabled cross-eaves dormer with shouldered coped gable and mullioned casement. Off-centre gable has corbelled external stack with cornices, two scrolled brackets and two blank panels. Gable to right has stepped-head mullioned casement with scrolled strapwork finial above. Intermediate stepped boundary wall has scrolled brackets at changes of level. Inside courtyard, C19 and C20 buildings with mullioned and transomed casements and some chamfered doorways.

Interior has principal rooms and corridors with rib vaults. Other rooms have brick and iron barrel vaults. Carriage court has a 3 bay arcade on each side and vaulted aisles on south, east and west. Paired columns with carved bases and naturalistic capitals and corbels. Roof has heavy diagonal timber ribs with nailhead. To south, main doorway of three orders with shafts, cove and roll moulded round head and blank panel in tympanum. To its right, square headed moulded doorway to business room, and to left, three lancets. Main stairwell, to north, has cantilevered stone staircase with landings and corbelled string carrying twisted iron balusters. Ramped and scrolled brass and timber handrail. Landings to east carried on pierced girders with pierced spandrels. Vaulted panelled timber roof with moulded ribs and foliate boss.

Music Hall has to west a six bay arcade with three granite piers with naturalistic capitals and cable moulded arches with hood moulds. Above, triforium arcade with paired marble shafts, naturalistic capitals and cusped arches. Naturalistic wrought iron balustrade with brass handrail. To west, vaulted aisle with square responds, and to south, a pair of elaborate traceried panelled doors. Triforium has two pairs of similar doors. Music Hall has to north and south large roll moulded doorways, and to east, central ashlar fireplace, with paired flanking columns and foliate capitals, and carved corbelled hood including stencilled motto and blank shield. Elaborate painted, stencilled and gilt decoration throughout. Adjoining drawing room has similar decoration.

Vault has central iron column with flanking marble shafts and iron foliate decoration. South and west walls have double cusped headed fitted mirrors in moulded frames. West side has inlaid marble fireplace with flanking shafts with cable moulded and crocketed mantelshelf. Above, shouldered mantel mirror with floral and foliate surround and cresting. Cedar Room has panelling up to impost level and doorways with flanking octagonal piers and billeted cresting. Moulded ashlar and marble fireplace. Overmantel mirror with cable moulded frame. Dining room has to north a blocked opening with foliate capitals and band with good naturalistic carving. Incomplete ashlar fireplace with foliate capitals and frieze.

Library has Tudor arched and pointed arched vaults and to west, a two bay arcade with central granite pier. Bay window to west has panelled plaster ceiling. Chapel has vault with moulded ribs, three window openings with shafts, and windows with patterned stained glass. Business room has fitted moulded bookcases and ashlar fireplace with marble shafts.

First floor corridor has cusped moulded opening at north end and staff moulded vault. Doors have shouldered and staff moulded architraves or segmental heads. Panelled doors. South east tower has cantilevered iron winder stair with landings, pierced strings, scrolled balusters, ramped handrail and stone treads. Second floor corridor has plain vault and roll moulded square headed doorways with cambered lintels. Several chamfered and roll moulded ashlar fireplaces.
