Public house. Probably C17 incorporating medieval elements. Random and coursed
limestone rubble with wooden lintels; Stonesfield-slate roof with brick and
ashlar stacks. 5-unit range of 2 builds. 2 storeys. Irregular 7-window front is
slightly lower in the 2 bays to left which have casements plus a doorway near
the junction; higher range has a further doorway, 12-pane C18 and C19 sashes at
first floor, and the ground-floor windows are mostly casements, including one of
4 lights; a rubble mounting block of 4 steps is built against the front wall.
Both ranges show evidence of early alteration. Roof is half-hipped to right and
has stacks at the junction of ranges and on the left gable. Rear is largely
obscured by C20 extension but retains a rounded projection, formerly a
staircase. Interior: lower bays contain heavy chamfered intersecting beams which
may be medieval and part of a hospital formerly on the site. Once known as Louse
Hall. C20 extensions to rear are not of special architectural interest.
