The Leys Cottage
II
Small house. Mid C17, extended C20. Coursed squared marlstone with some ashlar
dressings; thatch roof with rebuilt gable stacks. Single-unit plan (originally
larger) extended. 2 storeys plus attic and one storey. Street front of main
section has a 3-light stone-mullioned window with label and a small cellar
window with a chamfered stone surround. Right gable wall has a parapet with
moulded projecting kneelers, and has a further 3-light mullioned window at first
floor plus a renewed casement in the gable. Rear has an old 3-light casement
and a 2-light stone-mullioned cellar window; part of the eaves rises over the
stair which has 3 small windows, 2 with old wooden frames and lattice glazing.
Thatched C20 bay to left is on the site of part of the original house; a
flat-roofed extension is linked to the right rear corner. Right gable wall has a
small scratched date (1677) which is unlikely to record the date of building.
Interior: small inglenook fireplace; winder stair; stop-chamfered beam; heavy
purlins. C20 bay contains a large open fireplace (partly reduced) with a
chamfered bressumer, for many years an external feature. Two 6-panel doors, now
internal, have good fielded panels.
