WROXTON CHAPEL LANE
9/177 Balscote House
House. Mid C17 with early C19 additions. Datestone 1806 on interior. Regular
coursed ironstone rubble. Steeply pitched slate roof. 2 renewed stone ridge
stacks. Stone coped gables with moulded kneelers. 2-unit plan added to at later
dates. Garden front. Left part, lower and probably dates from early C19. Single
storey plus attic. French door and C20 wood casements with wood lintels. Rear
has early C19 metal casements with wood lintels. Main part. 2 storeys plus
attic. 4-window range. Entrance off-centre to right has renewed door and renewed
stone hood mould with label stops. Ground floor has three 3-light C20 casements
and a small C20 window to left of door. Stone lintels. First floor has four
3-light C20 casements. 4 hipped roof dormers. Right end has 3- and 4-light stone
mullioned windows with hood moulds and label stops. Rear has rectangular
staircase projection and rear entrance. C20 flat-roofed extension. First floor
has 3-light casements with crown glass, lead cames and bars. Wood lintels.
Interior. Wooden spiral staircase, stop-chamfered beams, inglenooks with
chamfered beams, butt-purlin roof with collar beam, plank doors with
wrought-iron fasteners, stone flag floors.
