5/10 War Memorial Cross in
forecourt of Ripon College
GV II

War memorial. Circa 1920. Limestone. Square stone plinth with Latin
inscription on three sides, 2 steps, base with broach-stops and a narrow
octagonal shaft. Elaborate stone head with crocketted spirelet has 4
canopied niches with carved scenes: east - Crucifixion with the Virgin Mary
and St John; south - St Michael and dragon; west - Virgin and child; north -
St George and dragon. Each is supported by angels holding shields.
Commemorates alumni of Cuddesdon Theological college killed during the First
World War.
