18/07/63 of Shot over Park
(Formerly listed as The Old
Stables, now estate building. Early C18, possibly earlier. Limestone rubble with
squared quoins; plain-tile roof. Double-depth plan. 2-storey front; 3-storey
rear. Symmetrical 7-window front, which breaks forward in the centre 3 bays
under a triangular pediment, has a 6-panel door with rectangular overlight,
stone architrave and floating cornice, and has leaded wood-framed cross windows.
The ashlar pediment, which contains a moulded surround for a clock and breaks
into the painted wooden cornice, may be a later addition. Hipped roof. End walls
have pairs of cross windows on the top floor. 3-window rear has 3 doors below
loft doors, with cross windows in the top storey. Interior: 6-panelled doors in
the hallway and some fielded panelling used as partitions; remains of stalls at
rear. The building appears to have been designed as stables, loft and servants
accommodation, although it is reputed to be the mid C17 Ranger's Lodge.
