CHECKENDON

Public House. Late C15/early C16 with extensions of late C17 and early
C19. 3 base crucks, painted brick. Thatched roof with dormers; tiled
roofs with dormers and tall brick chimney stacks; slated roof with
tall brick chimney stacks. L-shaped plan with cross passage on long
axis. 2 storeys with single storey extension at right angles.
Irregular frontage to road with C17 ledged boarded door with strap
hinges and hung on pintles. Some early C19 hornless sashes. Windows
to forecourt metal-framed. Interior with lower part of crucks forming
part of the bar. Extensions on long axis with chamfered and some
stopped beams and wainscotting; altered on ground floor to form one
space. Crucks exposed in 1st floor passage and rooms. Early C19
extension at right angles has partly exposed roof braces to the
interior. This building has been in use as a public house known as the
Four Horseshoes since at least the 1840's.
