5/251 Church of St Leonard
Church. C12 foundations; rebuilt 1846 by H J Underwood. Flint with stone dressings;
plain tile roof. 3-bay nave and chancel with apse end. Romanesque Revival style.
Gabled porch to left of centre with glazed C20 double outer doors; C19 inner door
with wrought iron hinges. Round-arched main doorway with 2 orders of columns. Plank
door to chancel with wrought iron hinges and round arched head, with single order
of columns. Round-headed lancets to all openings. Bellcote to left hand gable end.
Interior: Romanesque style font with round column base and square top with carved
roundels to each side. Romanesque style pulpit with round column base and hexagonal
top with each face having a blind round headed arch supported on columns. Pulpit
approached by spiral stone steps with wrought iron balustrade. Encaustic tiles to
floor of chancel and glazed embossed tiles form dado to chancel. Romanesque style
wooden altar rail. Organ gallery to west end with Romanesque style balustrade. C19
stained glass window to chancel by Powell and Sons. Verses from Bible painted over
nave windows. Hammer beam roof trusses. A good example of the Romanesque Revival
