Lychgate approximately 40m. west of Dorchester Abbey

Lychgate. 1867. Oak frame on limestone ashlar plinth; shingle roof. Heavy framework has two moulded arch-braced trusses plus two intermediate arched trusses of lesser scantling. Sides have open cusped arcading with carved foliage spandrels. Curved raking shores rest on projecting sill plates to all sides. Roof projects to front and rear on curved brackets and has scalloped, moulded and carved bargeboards.

Date is included in commemorative inscription on inner faces of main trusses but noted as designed by W. Butterfield c.1852-3 (Pevsner/Sherwood). Sir G.G. Scott was restoring the church in 1867.

One of a fine group of buildings near the Abbey.
