Inn, now hotel. Late C16/early C17, extended C18 and C20. Timber framing with
some brick infill; colourwashed brick; old plain-tile roofs with brick stacks.
Complex plan. 2 and 3 storeys. 3 earlier bays, to right of front are
triple-gabled with 2 shallow jetties on moulded bressumers. Ground floor has a
carriage entry, to right, plus a double horizontal-sliding sash. First floor has
exposed framing, with decorative brick infill including herringbone, lozenges
and the date 1691 in black bricks; the three 16-pane sashes replaced oriels for
which evidence remains. Top floor has 3 small horizontal-sliding sashes. To
left, 5-window brick lower range, with storey band and brick dentil eaves
course, is of 3 builds: to extreme left, two C20 bays; centre 2 bays have
entrance and 16-pane sash plus, at first floor, a pair of 12-pane C18 sashes
with thick glazing bars; to right, a wide bay with 16-pane sashes with thick
bars at ground and first floors. Roof has large stacks to left of earlier range
and on ridge of lower range. Further C18 range lies parallel with brick range
and has a half-hipped roof. Projecting to rear are a C18/C19 outbuilding range
and a taller C20 brick range. Interior not inspected. Hotel now also includes
Nos.22 and 24 (q.v).
