8/147 Rycotewood College
Workhouse, now college. c.1835, by George Wilkinson, with late C19 and C20
alterations and additions. Red brick; slate roof; brick stacks to rear. Complex
plan of 3-storey central octagonal pavilion with 2-storey, 6-window wings to
left and right, and 3-storey, 7-window cross-wings to ends. C20 doors to most
doorways. 12-pane unhorned sashes with cambered brick heads to window openings
of central octagonal pavilion. Basket-arched openings to ground floor of wings
having C20 wooden casements. 2-light wood casements to first floor of wings and
to all window openings of cross-wings. Hipped roofs, that to central octagon has
lead ridges and copper weathervane to apex. Interior: cast iron columns support
ceiling of ground floor central octagon. C20 alterations to interior. C20
additions to rear and late C19 single-storey cross-wing to centre.
