Church. Early C13 nave; late C13 aisles and tower; early C14 chancel, extension
of aisles, porch and windows; restored c.1858 by E. Banks of Wolverhampton,
under supervision of G.E. Street and J.H. Parker. Knapped flint, with areas of
brick and stone, with stone dressings; old plain-tile roof to nave and chancel;
lead roof to aisles and tower. 6-bay nave, west tower, 7-bay north and south
aisles, 5-bay chancel, Porch to left of centre of south aisle: moulded
stone 2-centre arched archway with hood mould: moulded stone parapet:
quadripartite vault on corner-shafts, with moulded ribs and carved centre boss;
stone niches to sides; 2-centre arched doorway of 3 orders on columns, with hood
mould, with plank door. 2-light reticulated tracery window with hood moulds to
all openings except paired lancets with flat heads to clerestory, and 3-light
reticulated tracery windows to east ends of aisles and chancel. 2-centre arched
doorway with blank door to first stage of west face of tower. Triple lancet with
hood mould to second stage of tower. 2-light reticulated tracery louvred
openings to third stage; corbelled eaves and saddleback roof. Interior: mid C19
king-post roof with cusped principals to chancel, mid C19 arch-braced
collar-truss roof with bosses to nave, lean-to roofs to aisles. Chancel: early
C20 wood panelling to reredos with C18 painting of the Entombment. Early C14
piscina and sedilia with ogee arches to right. East window by Clayton and Bell
c.1865. C14 stained glass windows to left and right, of figures in canopied
surrounds. Collection of C14 and C15 brasses re-set on walls above choirstalls.
C14 wood chancel screen with quatrefoil tracery to top, having double-doors to
centre. 2-centred chancel arch on cluster columns. Nave: 5-bay arcades of
2-centred arches on round columns to aisles. C19 octagonal font. 2-centred arch
to tower. North aisle: piscina to right; C14 octagonal stone font, with
octagonal stone plinth, with area of medieval tiles to surround. South aisle:
piscina and cusped tomb recess to right; re-set C13 stone recumbent figure of
knight lying in prayer. Church has collection of paintings reputed to be by Sir
James Thornhill.
