House. c.1580. Built for Small, a burgess of Wallingford. Coursed squared
limestone with ashlar stone dressings; old plain-tile roof; brick ridge stacks
to front centre and rear right of centre. H-plan of two 2-unit lobby-entry plan
ranges connected by central staircase hall. Tudor style. 2 storeys and attic;
3-window range. Plank door with stone Tudor doorway. 3-light leaded stone
mullion windows with continuous hood mould to left and right. Single-light
leaded casement to first floor centre; 3-light leaded stone mullion windows to
left and right. Dripmould to eaves. 2 coped cross-gables to attic with C20
restored 2-light leaded stone mullion windows. Rear: 2 storeys and attic;
4-window range. Double plank doors to stone Tudor-arched doorway to right of
centre. 2-light leaded stone mullion windows to left and right. 4-light leaded
stone mullion windows to first floor left and right. 4-light leaded stone
mullion window to left of centre. Dripmould to eaves. 2 coped cross-gables to
attic with 2-light leaded stone mullion windows. Right and left returns: 3-light
stone mullion windows to ground and first floor ends of front and rear ranges.
2-light leaded stone mullion windows to ground and first floor recessed centre.
2-light leaded stone mullion windows to gable-ends of front and rear ranges.
Interior: late C16 wood open-well staircase from ground to first floors with
slat balustrade. Early C20 wood open-well staircase from first floor to attic
with slat balustrade in same style. Queen-strut roof. Most ground and first
floor rooms have late C16 stone Tudor-arched fireplaces with shaped brick backs.
Most rooms have late C16 plank or panelled doors. Most rooms have chamfered
spine beans with shaped end stops. Probably C18 round-arched tunnel through
central chimney stack between front door and staircase hall.
