House, now 2 dwellings. Late C17, later C17 wing to left. Uncoursed limestone
rubble, coursed to left; gabled stone slate roof; brick ridge stack and right
end external stack of stone finished in brick. L-plan with front left wing. 2
storeys and attic; symmetrical 5-window range to right has chamfered stone
lintel over blocked central door, and 2-light chamfered stone-mullioned and
transomed windows: fire insurance plaque: 2-light leaded casements in 2 roof
dormers. Gabled front of left wing has similar 2- and 3-light windows and
round-headed attic window with Gothick-glazed head. Left side wall has similar
2-light windows. 3-storey stair-turret to rear has one 2-light and one 3-light
leaded casements. C20 and C19 rear extensions. Interior: mainly C20. No.1 to
right: C16 ovolo-moulded stone fireplace to right and chamfered stone fireplace
to left of ridge stack: blocked lobby-entry. Mid C18 panelling and china
cupboard in room to left. Chamfered stone fireplace in first-floor room to
right. Open-well staircase has plain balusters set on closed string, and rises
to attic. Stone House was a coaching inn known as The Old George.
