Bridge. C14 with later repairs. Coursed and dressed limestone. 6 pointed arches
to entries are divided by prominent cutwaters which provide refuges for
travellers above. Groins of 2 central arches have lateral ribs surviving. New
Bridge is the most complete medieval bridge in Oxfordshire, and was the scene of
skirmishes in the Civil War when Parliamentary forces under Waller attempted to
cross the bridge in order to surround Oxford and capture the King. Scheduled as
an Ancient Monument.
