9/164 The Vicarage


Vicarage. c.1850, by G.E. Street for Rev. W.J. Butler. Limestone ashlar; old
tile roof; limestone ashlar stacks. L-plan. Gothic Revival style, One storey and
attic; 4-window range. Gable wall of left projecting wing has cavetto-moulded
3-light cross-window with cusped heads, and hood mould over 2-light transomed
late C13-style window above. 2 offset buttresses on wall to right, with moulded
pointed arched doorway to original plank door with original fittings, flanked by
one-light transomed window with cusped head to right and 4-light cross-window
with latticed lights and iron grille to left; gabled half-dormer over door has 3
stepped latticed lights with iron grille and cusping to centre light. Cusped
rafters exposed at eaves, kneelers and cusped heads to coping. Gabled roof;
ridge and left lateral stacks. Similar detailing with bay windows to side walls.
Right side wall has 2 gabled projections and pointed-arched doorway to C20
service door. Similar one-storey gabled service wing to rear right, attached by
wall to coal-house in similar style with latticed lights. Interior: Original
detailing by G.E. Street, with fireplaces, doors, staircase, shutters and
panelling, noted as surviving.
