2/185 The Cottage


House. Two ranges: Late C16/early C17 to right partly demolished, 2-storey block
to left built in late C17; converted into cottages in mid C19. Roughcast walls,
over timber frame to right; old tile roof to left, thatched to right; roughcast
and C20 brick stacks. 2-units with rear outshut to right, late C17 two-unit
lobby-entry plan to left. 2-storey, 3-window range to left with C20 porch and
door and early C20 windows; gabled roof and ridge stack. One storey and attic
2-window range to right has blocked door; mid C19 two- and 3-light casements and
one C20 casement, and gabled roof with ridge stack. Mid C19 casements to rear
left, one C18 lead-latticed light to rear right. Interior: Late C17 block to
left has chamfered beams throughout and full set of chamfered and stopped beams
and joists to ground-floor room on right; early C18 fireplace with
bolection-moulded surround on left; late C17 winder stairs and ribbed doors;
collar-truss roof wtih butt purlins. Late C16/early C17 block to right has
chamfered beams, inserted stack and 2 mid C19 straight flight staircases and
2-bay queen-post roof. The late C16/early C17 block originally extended further
left because upper face of truss adjoining late C17 block faces right.
