Water garden and swimming pool. Laid out circa 1903-06 by Perkins and Bulmer for Mr
Pepper, a coal magnate. Extends to south of garden pavilion (qv). Paved copings,
rubble retaining walls. Long rectangular basin with rebated corners, the south end
is fed by a minor cascade spring flanked by carved horses; behind are steps up to
the swimming pool at a higher level; this has apsed ends and stepped edges. Paths
at different levels to lawn and flagged hallways; steps between levels at ends and
in centre. The steps between the swimming pool and lower basin lead to path up to
the stairs of the main terrace (qv). The garden layout reflects Edwardian ideals;
this water garden is beautifully landscaped.
