Grove Ash
3/117 Lower Grove Ash Farmhouse


Farmhouse. Mid C17, enlarged C18 and altered early C19. Coursed squared
marlstone. Stonesfield-slate roofs with ashlar and brick stacks. 2-unit
lobby-entry plan, extended to 4 units then to L plan. 2 storeys plus attic. The
right half of the 4-window main range is earlier, and has a central doorway with
6-panel door. To right is a 3-light ovolo-moulded stone-mullioned window with
label; a larger 3-light mullioned window to left, a 3-light lattice casement
above, and a small single-light window over the door, all have labels and are
probably early C19. Roof has a central stack and a gabled roof dormer to left.
Added bays to left have further casements, one with a label. Lower service wing
projects from left with a slated wooden verandah facing right. Short wing at
rear of earlier bays has a further 3-light ovolo-moulded mullioned window in its
outshut. Rear of later section has some segmental-arched openings with
projecting keyblocks. Interior not inspected but noted as having stop-chamfered
beams at first floor and in the later bays; attic stair over the lobby;
chamfered and stopped doorframe leading to the rear wing; rear stair projection
incorporated into slightly-later rear wing; 2 rows of butt purlins.
