SANDFORD ST.MARTIN LEDWELL
6/126 Upper Close
House. Early C18, extended C20. Marlstone ashlar and some limestone rubble;
concrete plain-tile roof with rebuilt stacks. 2-unit plan. 2 storeys plus attic.
Earlier section has a 4-window ashlar front with plinth, storey band and
segmental arches at ground floor. Doorway, to right of centre, has a flight of
stone steps, and the 3 ground-floor windows have tall cross casements with
leaded lights. The window above the doorway is blocked; the remainder have
2-light leaded casements. C20 extensions to right. Rubble rear wall has been
altered but retains some segmental arches and one leaded casement. Roof dormers
to rear. Interior: large open fireplace with timber bressumer. Rear of window
frames has ogee moulding. Probably part of Ledwell Park, re-built early C18 for
the Earl of Deloraine and demolished c.1800.
