2/172 The Masons Arms Public House

GV II

Public house. 1831 on datestone. Marlstone ashlar and coursed squared rubble;
Welsh-slate roof with brick gable stack. L-plan. 2 storeys. Ashlar front has a
higher 3-window central section with flanking pilasters, storeyband and a
triangular pediment which contains a limestone relief with arms and the date;
the middle bay breaks forward below the main pediment with a smaller pediment
above a first-floor window, and has an added shallow-gabled ashlar porch with a
cambered archway sheltering a doorway with a blind tympanum and a door composed
of radiating planks; the outer 2 bays have 2-light C20 casements except to left
of the door where 16-pane sash is flanked by inserted narrow sashes. Left of
the central section is a lower pedimented bay with a 3-centre arched doorway in
a projecting surround. To extreme left, the end of a hipped-roofed range which
returns to rear has a 3-centre arched carriage entrance with keyblock, now
window. Right of central section is a corresponding bay, but without pediment,
in which the projecting door surround is carried up to the eaves; its right end
has a gable parapet. Interior not inspected.
