Small country house and attached summerhouse.Mid C18,remodelled and service wing added in 1846,for G.H.Barnett. Limestone ashlar;service wing of dressed limestone with ashlar dressings.Two-span slate roofs.Rectangular block with service wing to north.Two storeys and attic with two storey service wing.South front:moulded plinth,chamfered quoins,first floor cill band,moulded cornice and parapet with balustrading above windows,raised and fielded panels between,plain dies and moulded rail.Ashlar stacks consisting of paired square shafts with moulded caps,two in front of front ridge,one to rear,two integral end stacks to right,one to left,and one lateral stack to rear.Four hipped dormers with glazing bar sashes.Two:three:two bays,with central break;glazing bar sashes with moulded architraves,those on ground floor with triple keystones.Central one storey canted bay with moulded cornice,balustraded parapet with panelled dies,glazing bar sashes to left and right and central pair of French casements with overlight.Left hand return(entrance)front:two:two bays,with break to left. Entrance in two left hand bays consisting of door with six raised and fielded panels,moulded architrave,rectangular overlight and flanking side lights;three bay ashlar Tuscan porch(centre bay wider)with moulded cornice to soffit,full entablature,and balustrade with plain dies.Right hand return front:four bays.Small-paned half-glazed door to right with rectangular overlight,and plain stone doorcase with triple keystone,entablature and scolled brackets supporting triangular pediment.Rear:two bays to north west.Service wing:chamfered plinth,first floor cill band,eaves band and bracketed eaves.Pairs of ashlar ridge stacks and two integral end stacks to rear,consisting of one and three square shafts with moulded cornices.West front:two:two:two bays,with central triangular-pedimented break;glazing bar sashes with stone cills and stone lintels,keyed to ground floor.North front:six bays;blind first floor windows in outer bays.Central six-panelled door with flat hood on scrolled brackets and narrow side lights,and six-panelled doors to far left and right rectangular overlights.Bellcote in front of left hand first floor window.East front; two:two:two bays,stepped back to right.Six-panelled door in second bay from right with rectangular overlight.Interior partly inspected:mostly C19.Entrance hall:raised and fielded panelling panelled pilasters,frieze,moulded cornice and coved ceiling.Bolection-moulded stone fireplace.Panelled doors with moulded architraves,scrolled acanthus friezes and broken triangular pediments.Three arches to top-lit staircase hall;C20 three flight square-well staircase with wrought iron balustrade.Library:raised and fielded panelling and moulded dentil cornice.Marble fireplace in a late C18 style.Six-panelled doors with architraves,scrolled friezes and triangular pediments.Two arches to entrance hall.Drawing room:well-carved marble fireplace with Ionic pilasters.Pedimented doorcases.Pairs of niches flanking doorways.Ground floor rear room with marble fireplace in a late C18 style.Summerhouse:C.1846.Squared and coursed limestone with ashlar dressings;hipped slate roof.Elongated octagonal plan.Chamfered plinth and louvred gabled dormer to north.Three bay Tuscan portico to south(centre bay wider)with full entablature.Round-arched sashes in short sides and to rear,with plain flush stone architraves.Round-arched doorway to north west with half-glazed door.Short dressed stone wall linking summerhouse to rear wing of house,with chamfered plinth,coping and round-arched gateway.The house stands within a small park with a lake formed by the damming of the River Glyme,possibly landscaped by Capability Brown.The Church of Saint Mary(q.v.)stands by the house but the rest of the village was moved to the south east when the park was created in the early to mid C17.(Buildings of England:Oxfordshire:p613;VCH:Oxfordshire:pp124 and 130)
