approx. 5-16m. S and W of S
transept of Church of St. Mary
13 chest tombs, Two chest tombs approximately 8 metres south. Early C19.
Limestone. Tomb to north has revealed panels and moulded plinth, cornice and
top. Tomb to south, with scribed and beaded panels, moulded plinth and cornice
and shaped top, commemorates Joseph Sheppard, d.l816, and wife Mary, d.1818.
Chest tomb approximately 15 metres west-south-west. Late C18. Limestone. Raised
inscription panels with wheatear pendants; beaded nowy-headed end panels;
moulded plinth, cornice and top. Commemorates members of the Shorter family,
with 1790s dates. Three chest tombs approximately 8 metres west. Mid C18 and
early C19. Limestone. Townshend tomb to north has revealed pilaster panels.
Early C19 flanking inscription panel; moulded plinth and cornice; shaped and
fluted top. Late C18 Townshend tomb in centre has fielded panels, moulded plinth
and cornice and splayed top. Plain mid C18 Marriot tomb to south has
convex-moulding to lid. Three chest tombs approximately 16 metres west. Early to
mid C18. Limestone. Plain early C18 tomb to east has round-headed end panel with
sunk spandrels. Tomb in centre, with moulded plinth and cornice, commemorates
Thomas Webb, d.1720. Mid C18 tomb to west has moulded plinth and cornice and
corner balusters. and egg-and-dart moulding to inscription panel. Chest tomb
approximately 5 metres south. Early C19. Limestone. Raised fluted pilasters
flank scribed inscription panel; moulded plinth, cornice and top. Three C18 and
C19 chest tombs are not of special architectural interest.
