Alvescot House

House. Late C18, incorporating some older work to rear. Limestone ashlar to
south and west fronts of main block and to east side of rear wing. Remainder
coursed rubble. Stone slate roofs, the front block with stone gable copings and
2 rebuilt brick chimneys, rear wing with ashlar chimney. L-plan. 2 storeys and
attic; 4-bay front with outer bays gabled and slightly advanced. Projecting
plinth and first floor band course. Ground and first floors have large 3-pane
sashes with thin glazing bars. C20 2-light wooden attic casement in left gable.
Left side of front block has 2 bays of similar fenestration, the left bay having
a half-glazed door with radiating fanlight in flush semi-circular stone arch
with keyblock. Right side has arched stair window. Rear wing, of one and half
bays, has irregular fenestration, with re-used C17 stone surrounds to stair
windows, the lower stair window with stone mullion. 2 gabled roof dormers. Rear
has irregular gables of older build but with altered fenestration, the upper
windows having dressed stone surrounds with raised keyblocks and raised blocks
at mid-point of jambs. Small blocked roundel to attic of left gable.
