Row of 4 council houses. Dated 1929 on tablet in central gable. By Morley
Horder. Coursed rubble limestone with ashlar dressings, stone slate roofs and
stone chimneys. In Cotswold vernacular style. One storey and attic. Long
symmetrical range with 3 gables to front and central through-passage, 2 and
3-light unmoulded stone mullion windows with leaded glazing, the ground floor
with 10 windows, the attics with 2 windows to each gable. Passage has depressed
stone arch in Tudor style, moulded and stopped, with moulded spandrels and Tudor
hoodmould. Passage has entries to centre houses; end houses have gable-end
doorways with flat stone hoods on brackets. Said to be the earliest example of
the use of traditional materials for council houses. The choice of style was
that of Sir Stafford Cripps who lived in the village, and who paid for the
difference in cost of the extra labour and materials required. The intention was
to integrate the council houses both visually and socially into the life of a
picturesque village. Later council housing in Bulls Close, Filkins, and in
Burford and Kelmscott, was to follow this example.
